Fans waiting for Vinland Saga Season 3 have received a disappointing update from manga creator Makoto Yukimura, who has confirmed that the anime’s next season is not currently in production.
Yukimura responded to a fan asking about the possibility of a third season on X on October 22, 2026. When the fan asked whether he had any good news about the continuation, the manga creator gave a straightforward response.
“Sorry my friend. I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress.”
Yukimura’s comment has dashed hopes for an immediate announcement about the anime’s return. However, he did not say that Vinland Saga Season 3 had been permanently cancelled.

Vinland Saga Creator Says Season 3 Is Not Currently in Progress
The update came after a fan directly asked Yukimura whether he had any positive news about Vinland Saga Season 3.
Rather than leaving fans to speculate, Yukimura responded that the project was not currently moving forward.
Although the statement does not provide details about the reasons behind the situation, it is the clearest indication from the original manga’s creator that fans should not expect an immediate announcement about the anime’s continuation.
Neither a release date nor a new production announcement for Season 3 has been revealed.
It is also important to distinguish Yukimura’s response from an official cancellation announcement. He said the project is not currently in progress, not that the third season will never happen.
Vinland Saga Season 2 Ended In 2023
The update is particularly disappointing for fans who have been waiting since the conclusion of Vinland Saga Season 2 in June 2023.
The first season premiered in 2019 and was animated by WIT Studio, while MAPPA took over animation production for Season 2, which aired in 2023.

The second season shifted the story’s focus toward Thorfinn’s life after years of violence, exploring his struggle with guilt, his desire to change and his determination to pursue a life without war.
Season 2 concluded with Thorfinn moving forward with his dream of reaching Vinland, a land where he hopes people can live free from violence and slavery.
The ending left room for further adaptation, but fans have been waiting more than three years for news of a continuation.
Vinland Saga Manga Has Already Concluded
There is still plenty of story material for fans to revisit in the original manga, which concluded in July 2025 after nearly two decades of serialization.
Written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura, the manga began serialization in 2005 and follows Thorfinn’s journey through the Viking world, beginning with his pursuit of revenge and gradually developing into a story about redemption, peace and the consequences of violence.
The manga’s conclusion means readers can experience the complete story in its original form, even as the anime’s future remains uncertain.
However, the completion of the manga does not automatically mean that a full anime adaptation will follow. Anime productions require their own planning, financing, scheduling and coordination between the companies involved.
Will Vinland Saga Season 3 Ever Happen?
For now, fans will have to wait for further news.
Yukimura’s statement does not confirm a cancellation, but it also gives no indication that production is about to begin. No release date, returning studio or production schedule for Season 3 has been announced.
The manga creator’s response is a reminder that a completed source manga does not guarantee an anime sequel.
For fans hoping to see Thorfinn’s journey continue on screen, the latest update offers little reassurance. Whether the anime eventually returns will depend on future developments that Yukimura has not yet announced.
