The upcoming live-action GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka has released a brand-new 90-second trailer, offering fans their best look yet at Takashi Sorimachi’s return as the legendary teacher Eikichi Onizuka.
The preview showcases Onizuka navigating the challenges of modern-day education, teasing how the iconic teacher will take on a new generation of students in Japan’s Reiwa era.

The newly released trailer opens with the line: “Eikichi Onizuka, 52 years old. He’s still a teacher.”

It then asks what it truly means to be the “Great Teacher” in today’s world, offering a glimpse at the series’ updated setting while retaining the rebellious spirit that made the original drama and manga so popular.
The trailer also introduces several members of the new cast and previews Onizuka’s latest challenges inside the classroom.
Takashi Sorimachi Returns as Onizuka & A New Story for the Reiwa Era
The new drama sees Takashi Sorimachi reprise his role as Eikichi Onizuka, nearly 28 years after starring in the original 1998 live-action television series.
He is joined by Meru Nukumi, Asuka Kudo, Maryjun Takahashi, Tomohiro Ichikawa, Atom Shukugawa, Yoshimasa Kondo, Takashi Ukaji, Nanako Matsushima, and Yuta Yamazaki.
The series is directed by Satoru Nakajima and Kento Matsuda, with Kazuhiko Yukawa returning to write the screenplay based on Tooru Fujisawa’s original manga.
Unlike previous adaptations, the new series follows Onizuka at 52 years old, placing the legendary teacher in Japan’s modern education system.
Set at Seishin Private Academy, the drama explores how Onizuka’s unconventional teaching methods collide with an era shaped by digital communication, efficiency-driven management, and new challenges facing students.
The series premiered on Fuji TV and Kansai TV on July 20, 2026, airing every Monday at 10:00 PM JST and will also be streaming on Netflix.

About Great Teacher Onizuka
Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) is a manga series written and illustrated by Tooru Fujisawa. Originally serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1997 to 2002, the series follows former biker Eikichi Onizuka, who becomes a teacher despite having no formal qualifications. Known for tackling bullying, abuse, and social issues through his unconventional methods, the manga has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, won the 22nd Kodansha Manga Award, and inspired multiple live-action dramas, films, anime adaptations, and sequel manga series.
