The discussion began after Cartoon Network shared Pride Month artwork on Instagram featuring Gumball Watterson alongside the caption, “Love is beautiful. Now, more than ever, our LGBTQ+ family deserves to be seen, celebrated, and protected. We’re better and braver because of you. Happy Pride!“
While many users celebrated the post, others criticized it in the comments. Rather than ignoring the backlash, the official Cartoon Network account began replying directly to users.
One of its most widely shared responses read, “If you don’t support the community you’re not a true Cartoon Network kid, sorry.” The account also replied with messages such as “WE LOVE YOU,” “CRY HARDER,” and joked about people reacting negatively to gay characters from shows that ended years ago.
