Makoto Shinkai, the Japanese filmmaker, director and novelist renowned for his anime feature films such as Suzume, Weathering With You, Your Name, and The Garden of Words is now working on his latest film and this film will be a lot different from his usual films from film’s genre to the magic and disaster theme that has been constantly followed in his last works such as Suzume, Weathering With You and Your Name everything will be different in his upcoming work.
The first difference will be genre Makoto Shinkai’s next work will be a science fiction animated feature film that will also abandon the folk magic and disaster themes that have characterized some of his previous works. Additionally, romantic elements will be reduced. Unlike his earlier films, this work will not be linked to characters from previous works. Instead, it will present a vastly different worldview, possibly set in a distant future. Interestingly, the film’s scope may extend beyond Japan.
The Production of his next work began in May 2023, and as of April 2024, Makoto Shinkai was focused on developing character dialogues. The planning stage is expected to be completed around August. While Shinkai expressed interest in returning to his earlier style in the future, this particular film will not follow that path. This work will showcase more of Shinkai’s authorial traits.
A press conference on his latest work is scheduled for December 2025, with the film’s release anticipated in 2026. Seeing Makoto Shinkai explore new territory is exciting.
