Crunchyroll vs Hulu is not an even fight on paper. One service is built only for anime. The other is a general streaming service that carries a lot of it.
The real question is what you actually watch. If you follow new episodes every week, one service has a clear edge. If you mostly binge finished shows, or you already pay for Hulu, the answer changes.
Both services also got more expensive this year. Crunchyroll raised its US prices in February, and Hulu followed with its own hike in September. That makes it worth knowing what you get for the money before you commit.
This guide compares Crunchyroll and Hulu on price, library, new releases, and dubs. It also covers whether paying for both makes sense. Prices are US figures as of October 2026, with Canada and Australia noted where they matter.
Crunchyroll vs. Hulu: Quick Comparison

For most anime fans, Crunchyroll is the better pick. It is built around anime, it costs less, and it carries new shows as they air. Hulu is a general streaming service with a solid anime shelf. That makes it a good extra, not a replacement.
| Crunchyroll | Hulu | |
| Focus | Anime, plus extras like manga and mobile games | General entertainment: TV, movies, originals, and a live TV plan |
| US price | $9.99 to $17.99 a month, all ad-free | $12.49 with ads, $21.49 ad-free |
| Free trial | 7 days | None listed for on-demand plans |
| Anime library | Crunchyroll says it has 1,000+ titles | No official count; classics and big shonen hits |
| New episodes | Weekly simulcasts, usually about an hour after Japan | A few simulcasts a season; many shows arrive months later |
| English dubs | Dubs for many current shows, often weeks behind the sub | Full seasons often added with sub and dub together |
| Outside the US | Available in Canada, Australia, and other regions | US-only service; a Hulu hub on Disney+ elsewhere |
| More than anime? | No | Yes |
| Best for | Anyone who follows the current season | Hulu or Disney+ subscribers who want some anime |
Does Hulu offer more than anime? Yes, and that is its main selling point. Hulu is built around TV shows, movies, and originals, with a separate live TV plan on top. Crunchyroll sticks to anime and related extras.
Crunchyroll vs. Hulu Pricing
The Crunchyroll vs Hulu price gap is wider than the sticker prices suggest. Every Crunchyroll plan is ad-free. Hulu’s cheapest plan has ads, and going ad-free costs a lot more.
| Service | Plan | Monthly price |
| Crunchyroll | Fan | $9.99 |
| Crunchyroll | Mega Fan | $13.99 |
| Crunchyroll | Ultimate Fan | $17.99 |
| Hulu | With Ads | $12.49 |
| Hulu | Premium (no ads) | $21.49 |
| Disney+ and Hulu | With Ads | $12.99 |
| Disney+ and Hulu | Premium | $21.99 |
Here is the math. Hulu with ads costs $2.50 a month more than Crunchyroll Fan. Hulu Premium costs $7.50 a month more than Mega Fan, which is $90 a year. And even on Premium, a few shows still play with a short ad before and after each episode because of streaming rights.
Hulu’s new prices took effect on September 23 for new subscribers. Existing subscribers see them on their next billing cycle.
Free options are limited on both sides. Crunchyroll ended its free ad-supported tier on December 31, 2025, so it now offers only a seven-day trial. I did not find a free trial for Hulu’s on-demand plans, so check Hulu’s checkout page before you sign up.
If you are in Canada or Australia, Crunchyroll is the only one of the two you can subscribe to directly. In Canada, Fan is $10.99 and Mega Fan is CA13.49 a month. In Australia, Fan is $11.99 and Mega Fan is $14.99.
Which Has More Anime?
Crunchyroll, by a wide margin. It is the dedicated anime service, and Crunchyroll says its catalog passes 1,000 titles. That covers classics, long-running series, and the current season in one app. Its library includes recent hits like Solo Leveling. If you finished that one, our list of anime like Solo Leveling has more to queue up. Crunchyroll also adds a Game Vault on Mega Fan and above, and manga with Ultimate Fan.

Hulu does not publish an anime count, and third-party numbers vary too much to trust. It is easier to judge by examples. Hulu’s anime hub lists big names such as Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Naruto Shippuden, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and Re:ZERO. It is a solid shelf, but it is a shelf, not a full anime service.
So does Hulu carry the same anime as Crunchyroll? Only in part. Hulu’s own release schedule lists Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 and Daemons of the Shadow Realm as Crunchyroll titles added to Hulu. Those arrive on Hulu’s timeline, not Crunchyroll’s. Hulu also has picks of its own, like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.
Which Is Better for New Anime Releases?
Crunchyroll, and it is not close. Simulcasts are the core of its business. New episodes usually land about an hour after they air in Japan. One weekly schedule tracker counted around 49 simulcast episodes for the week of October 19 to 25 alone. For fall 2026, Crunchyroll’s lineup includes The Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Black Clover Season 2, and Firefly Wedding.
Hulu does simulcast a few shows each season. This fall, Mission: Yozakura Family Season 2, Part 2 started on October 11 on Hulu in the US. But the more common pattern is a full season landing at once, months after Japan.
Two recent examples show the gap:
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3. It aired in Japan from January 9 to March 27, 2026, and streamed on Crunchyroll. Hulu added the complete season, subbed and dubbed, on July 10.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm. It premiered on Crunchyroll in the spring. Hulu added Season 1 on July 4.
That suits you if you like to binge a finished season. It does not suit you if you want to talk about episodes the week they air, or avoid spoilers online. Neither service has everything, either. Tokyo Revengers: War of the Three Titans Arc, for example, streams on Disney+.
Crunchyroll vs. Hulu for Dubbed Anime
Dub availability depends on the title, so check the show page before you subscribe. Still, the two services handle dubs in different ways.
Crunchyroll rolls out dubs while a show is airing. For fall 2026, it announced English dubs for 19 titles, including Black Clover Season 2 and The Apothecary Diaries Season 3. Most dub dates were announced later, and dubs usually trail the subbed episodes. One Piece shows how far behind they can be.

A schedule tracker had the English dub at episode 1,156 on October 20, while the subbed series had reached episode 1,180. Many Crunchyroll titles also have dubs in other languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and Hindi.
Hulu’s strength is dubs that are ready on day one. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 and Daemons of the Shadow Realm both arrived with sub and dub together. In September, Hulu also added English dubs of Honey Lemon Soda and A Sign of Affection. Its anime hub also labels dubbed titles, such as Dorohedoro.
Should You Subscribe to Both?
Most people do not need to. At the lowest prices, Crunchyroll Fan plus Hulu with ads comes to $22.48 a month. With Mega Fan, it is $26.48. That is a lot of money for libraries that overlap in places.
Subscribing to both makes sense in a few cases:
- You already pay for Hulu or Disney+ and want anime without leaving the app.
- Your household wants non-anime TV and movies alongside anime.
- There is a Hulu title you want, like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.
Otherwise, start with Crunchyroll. If a show you want lands on Hulu, add it for a month and cancel after you finish. Since Hulu does not list a free trial for on-demand plans, you will pay for that month. If you do add Hulu, the $12.99 Disney+ and Hulu bundle is better value than Hulu alone.
One thing to watch is the Hulu app itself. Disney plans to fold Hulu into the Disney+ app, and Disney’s CEO has said it should arrive by the end of the calendar year. Disney has said you will still be able to buy a standalone Hulu subscription. Check how it works before you sign up.
