The fifth Kingdom live-action film has stormed the Japanese box office. Kingdom: The Decisive Battle of Souls (Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen) debuted at No. 1 during its opening weekend, delivering the biggest opening for a Japanese live-action film released in 2026.
The film opened across 521 screens in Japan, including IMAX, MX4D, and 4DX formats.
During its first three days in theaters (July 17–19), Kingdom: The Decisive Battle of Souls sold 993,498 tickets and earned approximately ¥1.58 billion (about $10.7 million USD).
Including the July 20 public holiday, the film’s four-day total climbed to:
- 1.315 million admissions
- ¥2.064 billion at the Japanese box office
These figures make it the highest-opening Japanese live-action film of 2026.
The movie also debuted at No. 1 on Japan’s weekend box office chart, outperforming Toy Story 5, which fell to second place after leading the previous two weekends.
Directed once again by Shinsuke Sato, the film stars Kento Yamazaki as Xin (Shin) alongside returning cast members including Ryo Yoshizawa and Kanna Hashimoto. New additions to the cast include Jun Shison, Fuju Kamio, and Kenji Sakaguchi.
The latest movie adapts the fan-favorite Coalition Army Arc (Gassōgun Arc) from Yasuhisa Hara’s original manga.
Off to a Strong Start
While the opening trails the franchise’s highest-grossing film, Kingdom: Return of the Great General, in terms of admissions and revenue over the same four-day period, it has still delivered the strongest opening weekend for a Japanese live-action release this year.
The film is also scheduled to expand its premium format screenings with Dolby Cinema, SCREENX, and ULTRA 4DX beginning July 24, which could further boost its box office performance in the coming weeks.
