A brand-new anime awards event is coming to Japan, and it could become one of the biggest competitors to the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) has officially announced TOKYO ANIME NEXT, a new large-scale anime event that will be held from October 30 to November 2, 2026, with Ikebukuro, Tokyo serving as its main venue.
The event will feature anime screenings, exhibitions, symposiums, workshops, stage events, and a brand-new anime awards ceremony hosted by a coalition of Japanese anime studios.
George Wada Explains the Vision
During the announcement, George Wada, President of WIT Studio and Production I.G, explained the goal behind launching the new awards.
“We want to judge, recognize, and give awards to anime in Japan, by Japanese people.”

His statement has quickly drawn comparisons to the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, which are organized by Crunchyroll with voting from fans and an international judging panel.
Rather than replacing existing awards, TOKYO ANIME NEXT aims to become an industry-led celebration focused on recognizing Japanese animation from within Japan itself.
