Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations Of The Crimson Sun is officially returning with a second season. The anime has received a Season 2 announcement along with a brand-new promotional video, giving fans their first look at what is coming next in this post-apocalyptic political drama.
However, the production team has not revealed a release date for the second season yet:
The trailer highlights the important story instances took place in the first season. The trailer also shows a glimpse of how Misumi Aoteru grew up.
The announcement confirms that Studio Kafka will once again handle the anime’s production. A new PV has also been released alongside the announcement, teasing the continuation of the story after the events of the first season.
The anime is based on the political drama manga written by Ikka Matsuki, which presents a completely different future for Japan.
After a mysterious catastrophe, Japan has been divided into three major nations: Yamato, Buō, and Sei’i. Instead of focusing purely on traditional post-apocalyptic survival, the series puts politics, diplomacy, strategy, and warfare at the center of its story.
The main protagonist is Aoteru Misumi, a highly intelligent agricultural official who dreams of unifying Japan. His motivation comes from a deeply personal tragedy, as his wife Saki was executed by a corrupt regime.
Rather than relying only on physical strength, Aoteru attempts to change the country through his intelligence and diplomatic abilities. Along the way, he joins forces with the skilled swordsman Yoshitsune Asama.
Together, they become involved in a much larger struggle against powerful figures such as Prime Minister Denki Taira and General Mitsuhide Ryūmon.
The first season of the anime aired from April to June 2026, introducing viewers to this fractured version of Japan and its complicated political landscape. With Season 2 now confirmed, the story will continue to expand on the conflicts between the three nations.
The returning production staff includes:
Studio: Kafka
Director: Kazuaki Terasawa
Series Composition: Teruko Utsumi
Character Design & Chief Animation Director: Takahiko Abiru
Art Director: Seiki Tamura
Music: Kevin Penkin
The original Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations Of The Crimson Sun manga began serialization on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday and MangaONE on November 24, 2021. The manga has released 7 volumes as of April 2026.
The manga itself also went on hiatus on June 1, 2026, as author Ikka Matsuki took a break while recovering from steroid withdrawal syndrome.
For now, the biggest question is when Nippon Sangoku Season 2 will actually premiere. The production team has not announced a release date, so fans will have to wait for further updates.
