On the 7th of June 2024, the anime production company Gainax reported on its official website that it had filed for bankruptcy with the Tokyo District Court on May 29th and that the petition had been accepted. The company posted an “Announcement” in the name of its CEO, Yasuhiro Kamimura. It read, “We wish to inform you that on May 29th, Gainax Inc. filed for bankruptcy with the Tokyo District Court, and the petition has been accepted.”

The document briefly traces the company’s history, highlighting its significant contributions to the animation industry, particularly “Neon Genesis Evangelion.”

It explains that key staff departures and the formation of new companies by former employees, like Khara, Inc., significantly impacted Gainax. Despite continued efforts to produce new content and restructuring attempts as recent as 2019, the company could not overcome its financial struggles, leading to this outcome.
