Blue Giant by Shinichi Ishizuka is one of the most popular and artistic manga in the industry. The story about Jazz and the dying culture of Jazz music is very well written in this manga. This manga won so many awards worldwide and was even nominated for the best comic at the 46th Angoulême International Comics Festival which was held in 2019. On October 21, 2021, worldwide manga fans were surprised when the anime movie adaptation of this manga was announced and set to release on February 17, 2023.

Blue Giant Movie Review

Blue Giant Film and Studio NUT had the task to adapt the 10 Volumes of the manga into a single 2-hour movie. The movie starts directly in the halfway of Volume 4 where our main character Miyamoto Dai sees off his own family and goes to Tokyo. The movie did skip Dai’s whole backstory that’s why the character development of this movie feels kinda of incomplete, but the movie as a whole doesn’t even disappoint.

For a watcher who never watched Blue Giant, this movie will hook them in the first 5 minutes, the engaging story and the spectacular animation are the eye candy to watch. The backgrounds are really good and how they portrayed the city of Tokyo is very top-class. Many scenes of this anime will feel “Blue“. This movie focuses on the genre “Jazz” and the love for Jazz between our characters and the whole supporting cast.

This movie also very well sets up our 2 supporting characters Sawabe Yukinori and Tamada Junji Sawabe is the professional pianist while Tamada is still a newbie when it comes to drums. This movie picks these characters, their interactions, and the journey of these 3 characters who formed their band named “Jass“. Every single element of Blue Giant Movie screams Jazz. Every character’s Passion is portrayed perfectly in this movie which easily connects with the audience with the movie.

Even if this movie has good animation, good backgrounds, a good story, and good characters how did the music of this anime do when it comes to a movie about Jazz? There is only a 1-word answer: “Wow“. Blue Giant movie has a spectacular and beautiful music composition when it comes to the overall movie or the actual character performances. The music is the soul of this movie and even has the power to make someone emotional.

The makers of this movie and the ones who performed and composed the music for this movie showed that yes, they love Jazz and why they love Jazz. The Jazz performances are the highlight of this film which put the audience to dive deep into the beauty of Jazz music and the movie with the perfect climax.

I can agree many scenes are skipped, even some lack character development even the movie sometimes feels fast but the Jazz music covers up every single mistake of this film and you just can’t stop but to love the beauty of this music anime which sets the new standard about music animes. This movie left many messages like following your passion, being honest, not trying to run away or even the Goodbyes are nothing but the brand new amazing start of the greatest moments of your life.

If I have to pick out 1 flaw in this movie then it will be the use of CGI. During performances when the characters shift to CGI seems out of place and affects the scene too but after some time the problem with CGI also got overlooked due to the music and the approach they used to animate the whole music performance. No doubt, this movie has one of the best-animated music performances ever.

This movie is really good to watch and even the re-watch percentage of this movie is very high. If you don’t have anything to watch, you are bored and want to watch something new, give Blue Giant movie a chance and fall in love with jazz music. Just a tip, do watch this movie with high-quality speakers for the best experience…
