Mackenyu has officially been cast as Mash Burnedead in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Mashle: Magic and Muscles! Warner Bros. and Japanese production company CREDEUS revealed the casting on November 5, alongside a new teaser visual and special teaser video for the movie.
Scheduled to premiere in Japanese cinemas on March 19, 2027, the film will bring Hajime Komoto’s popular manga to live action, with Mackenyu taking on the role of the muscle-powered protagonist who challenges an entire magical world without using a single spell.
The announcement also revealed that Mackenyu spent three years building his physique for the role, hoping to create a portrayal that Mashle fans would find convincing. Original manga creator Hajime Komoto also shared an enthusiastic handwritten message, revealing his excitement after seeing Mackenyu’s muscular transformation during filming.
Mackenyu to Play Mash Burnedead in Live-Action Mashle Movie
Mackenyu will portray Mash Burnedead, the protagonist of Mashle: Magic and Muscles, in the upcoming live-action film.
The actor is known for playing Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s live-action One Piece series and appearing in the Rurouni Kenshin film franchise.
The role presents a different kind of challenge, as Mash is a character who rarely expresses his emotions and relies almost entirely on his extraordinary physical strength rather than words or magic.
Mackenyu acknowledged that understanding how to portray Mash’s personality was challenging, but explained that he wanted to preserve the character’s unique spirit.
In his comment, the actor said:
“I personally enjoyed Mashle: Magic and Muscles very much, so I approached filming with the desire to bring that same entertainment and excitement to live action.”
He continued:
“I struggled with how to portray Mash Burnedead, a character who doesn’t express much emotion. But Mash has extraordinary power, and even without saying much, that power should be able to communicate what he is feeling.”
Mackenyu explained that he kept this idea in mind throughout filming, believing it would allow him to preserve Mash’s personality and bring the character to life.
Mackenyu Spent Three Years Building Muscle for Mashle
One of the biggest revelations from the casting announcement is the amount of physical preparation Mackenyu undertook for the role.
According to the actor, he spent approximately three years developing his physique from the day he received the offer, wanting to create a convincing physical appearance that Mashle fans would accept.
He said:
“As the greatest preparation I could make, I spent three years from the day I received the offer building a physique that I hoped fans would find convincing. I hope you’ll see the results on the big screen.”
The transformation was also noticed by original manga creator Hajime Komoto, who shared his reaction after visiting the filming location.
Mackenyu added that working with fellow cast members around his age was particularly enjoyable. He described meeting many new friends through the production and revealed that the cast regularly laughed together, both during filming breaks and while shooting scenes.
“We laughed together even when we weren’t filming, and during takes we spent our days trying to hold back laughter.”
He believes that atmosphere will also come through in the finished movie and encouraged fans to look forward to its theatrical release.
He ended his message with a playful reference to the series’ obsession with physical strength:
“So then… shall we get those muscles moving?”
Mashle Movie Teaser Shows Mash’s Absurd Physical Strength
Alongside the casting announcement, the production committee released a new teaser visual and special teaser video.
The footage introduces Mash’s imposing silhouette, accompanied by the message that he is the man who will change the entire magical world. As expected, the teaser also highlights the central joke of the franchise: Mash doesn’t need magic when he has muscles.
One particularly amusing moment shows Mash performing rapid bench presses in the middle of a quiet forest, using a barbell estimated to weigh 9.2 tonnes.
The teaser also features Mash holding a dumbbell instead of the traditional magic wand, reinforcing the unusual premise that made the original manga popular.
Rather than revealing too much about the movie’s story, the footage focuses on introducing Mackenyu as Mash and demonstrating the film’s approach to adapting the series’ exaggerated physical comedy.
Mashle Creator Hajime Komoto Reacts to Mackenyu’s Transformation
Original manga creator Hajime Komoto also shared a handwritten comment celebrating the live-action adaptation and Mackenyu’s casting.
His reaction to hearing that Mashle would receive a live-action movie was particularly enthusiastic.
Komoto wrote:
“When I heard that a live-action movie was happening, I was seriously like, ‘What?!’ I got so excited after hearing the news that I ended up scratching up a cardboard box like my cat, Yoichimaru!!!!”
He then revealed that visiting the filming location left an even stronger impression on him.
“I still vividly remember seeing the sets at the filming location and being absolutely blown away by how incredible Mackenyu’s muscles looked. My own pectoral muscles started twitching left and right!”
Komoto also expressed excitement about Warner Bros. producing the movie, particularly given the company’s experience creating large-scale fantasy worlds.
He continued:
“And on top of that, Warner Bros., the company behind that magical world, is producing this movie…”
The creator ended his message with an enthusiastic recommendation for fans:
“I’m so excited that my legs feel like they’re about to cramp! I’m sure you’ll want to go to the gym after watching it!! Please come and see it in theatres!”
Considering that Mashle revolves around a protagonist who solves magical problems through physical strength, Komoto’s reaction to Mackenyu’s transformation feels particularly fitting.
