The controversy surrounding Mii-chan and Yamada-san has taken another serious turn after Kodansha confirmed that it has provided information to the police over social media posts involving the manga’s creator and other people connected to the series.
According to a September 28 report from Bengo4 News, information allegedly identifying the home of manga creator Nene Azuki had been spreading online. Some posts reportedly went further, with users claiming that they had actually visited the location based on the information being circulated.
The development comes as criticism surrounding the upcoming Mii-chan and Yamada-san anime adaptation continues to grow, following concerns raised by disability-related organizations and heated discussions across social media.
Kodansha Confirms It Has Provided Information To Police
Kodansha addressed the situation directly when speaking to Bengo4 News on September 28.
The publisher said that posts exposing the privacy of Nene Azuki and other people involved with the series, as well as posts that could threaten their physical safety, have already been reported to the police.
Kodansha stated:
“We have an obligation to protect the safety of the authors who contribute to us and our employees.”
The company added that it has already provided information to the police and is taking steps to address the situation when it comes to SNS posts and other behavior that unnecessarily exposes the privacy of the author or related parties or threatens their physical safety.
Kodansha also urged people to strictly refrain from such behavior.
Reports Claim The Creator’s Home Information Spread Online
The issue reportedly escalated after information said to identify Nene Azuki’s residence began circulating across social media.
The situation became even more serious when posts appeared from individuals claiming that they had gone to the creator’s home.
The report does not establish the identities of the people behind those posts, nor does it independently confirm every claim about visiting the address. However, the spread of alleged private information has become a major concern for the publisher.
Kodansha Also Acknowledges Criticism Of The Anime
While Kodansha has taken action regarding privacy and safety concerns, the publisher also addressed the criticism directed toward the Mii-chan and Yamada-san anime adaptation itself.
The company said it has received “various opinions and criticisms” regarding the anime and related matters.
Kodansha also made an unusually direct statement about the controversy, saying:
“There were quite a few points where we should reflect on our actions, and we are taking the situation seriously.”
The publisher said it is considering announcing its own position on the matter at an appropriate time.
This makes Kodansha’s latest response notable because the company is acknowledging criticism surrounding the adaptation while separately taking action against posts that it considers threats to the privacy or safety of those involved.
Mii-chan and Yamada-san Controversy Has Already Drawn Disability Concerns
The anime adaptation has faced criticism over its portrayal of disability, poverty and vulnerable people.
The Japan Autism Society previously published an opinion statement expressing strong concerns about how Mii-chan is portrayed and how audiences may interpret the character.
The organization said that while the manga does not explicitly diagnose Mii-chan with a disability, her portrayal and statements from the author can lead readers to infer that she has intellectual or developmental disabilities.
The organization also said that it had received reports from people with disabilities and their families who experienced anxiety and discomfort surrounding the work.
The National Association of Parents and Guardians of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities had previously expressed similar concerns and requested greater transparency surrounding the anime’s production and its handling of sensitive themes.
The Debate Has Now Taken A More Serious Turn
The latest development does not settle the criticism surrounding Mii-chan and Yamada-san, but it adds a completely separate issue to the ongoing controversy.
People can criticize the manga, discuss its themes and question the decision to adapt it into an anime. However, spreading someone’s alleged home address or claiming to have visited their residence is a separate privacy and safety issue.
Kodansha’s confirmation that it has already provided relevant information to police shows that the publisher is now treating those incidents as a matter of author and staff safety rather than simply another part of the online debate.
At the same time, Kodansha’s acknowledgement that there are “quite a few points” that warrant reflection suggests that the publisher intends to address at least some of the criticism surrounding the anime and manga at a later stage.
The company has not yet announced when that detailed statement will be released.
