The anime community is grieving today following news that veteran voice actor Tomomichi Nishimura, best known for his role as Coach Anzai (“Anzai-sensei”) in the classic basketball anime Slam Dunk, passed away on November 29, 2025, at the age of 79. The announcement was shared on December 9 via talent agency Arts Vision, confirming that Nishimura had been undergoing medical treatment before his passing. His funeral was held privately with close family.
Nishimura was a towering presence in Japanese voice acting, known not only for his iconic gentle yet powerful portrayal of Coach Anzai, whose line “If you give up, the game is already over” remains one of the most memorable lines in anime history, but also for his performances in ‘Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster’ (as the Vice-Captain), ‘Ojarumaru’ (Mike), ‘Mashin Hero Wataru’ (Shibaraku), and ‘CSI’ (Al Robbins), among many others.
Following the announcement, major voice actors across the industry shared emotional messages reflecting on their connection to Nishimura and the influence he had on their lives.
Yuki Kaji, who is known for voicing Eren Yeager, shared:
“Ichido-san… I was shocked to hear the news. I grew up listening to your voice. When I was a nervous newcomer sitting in the waiting area, you spoke to me with kindness. I’ll never forget how happy that made me. My deepest condolences.”
Toshio Furukawa, longtime colleague and close friend:
“The moment I heard the news of Nishimura-san’s passing, I was struck by a loss even greater than when my own parents passed away. No words are enough for what he meant to me — comrade, colleague, brother. We once laughed in the studio saying, ‘We’ve crossed a long river together.’ I can’t believe I am now saying farewell. Please don’t go ahead without us, Ichido! The tears won’t stop…”
Shigeru Chiba also offered respect:
“Nishimura Tomochika has passed away. We worked together in the theater troupe and on many anime works, but he always treated us with a gentle smile. We sincerely pray for his eternal rest. Thank you very much.”
Noriko Hidaka wrote: “Nishimura Tomo-san… I’ve had the pleasure of co-starring with you in various works, but for me, the strongest impression remains that of the vice captain in “Gunbuster.” You were a very kind person.
Please rest in peace… Thank you for all your hard work.”
These messages reflect how deeply Nishimura was admired not only for his talent, but for his warmth, mentorship, and presence behind the microphone.
