Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has revealed that his global blockbuster RRR, featuring Ram Charan and JR NTR, is heading toward an anime adaptation, with discussions already underway involving animation studios in Japan.
Speaking in a recent interview with Polygon, Rajamouli confirmed that conversations are actively happening, though nothing has been finalized yet.
“We have been in talks with a few studios in Japan to make RRR in anime,”
“So I’m waiting for things to get through. Hopefully it happens, and hopefully we can announce a cool continuation of RRR anime.”
While no studio has been named and no official announcement has been made, Rajamouli’s comments suggest that the project is being considered seriously rather than as a one-off experiment.
Rajamouli’s Growing Interest in Anime
The director also shared that his interest in anime is relatively recent but deeply influential. He credited several popular titles for opening his eyes to the medium’s storytelling potential, including Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan, along with Netflix’s animated series Arcane.
“I was introduced to anime very recently, and what I have seen has blown me away. Why did I miss out on these things for so long?”
According to Rajamouli, anime has influenced how he now thinks about pacing, emotional intensity, and visual storytelling, even though his current filming schedule has limited how much he can watch.
Rajamouli explained that anime has reshaped his understanding of how stories can surprise audiences without sacrificing emotional depth.

“It opened up new avenues for me to understand how stories can be told in a more attacking and impressive manner, how you stun the audience with unexpected moments and with a lot of emotion added to that. It’s not just a surprise, it’s very emotionally driven, compelling movements, which are also surprises.”
He emphasized that anime’s strength lies not just in spectacle, but in pairing shock with emotional payoff—an approach that aligns closely with the operatic storytelling style that defined RRR.
Although the RRR anime has yet to be officially greenlit, Rajamouli confirmed that animation is becoming an increasingly important part of his creative plans. His epic franchise Baahubali is already set to receive a two-part animated spin-off, with the first instalment expected to release in 2027.
Meanwhile, Rajamouli is currently focused on his next live-action feature Varanasi, which is scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on April 7, 2027.
Whats’s Next?
While there is no official confirmation yet, Rajamouli’s comments make it clear that an RRR anime adaptation is actively being explored, not merely imagined. If the project moves forward, it would mark one of the most high-profile collaborations yet between Indian cinema and the Japanese anime industry.
For now, fans will have to wait, but the director’s enthusiasm suggests that if the anime happens, it will be something he intends to do right.
