DIrector Minoru Ota shared comment and a special video featuring glimpses of the anime’s production process and scenes:
I’m Minoru Ohta of Kyoto Animation, director of “Sparks Of Tomorrow,” and I’m thrilled that following “Violet Evergarden,” this work will be available worldwide on Netflix. Set in a Kyoto, Japan, in an “if” world where steam engines, rather than electricity, are unusually developed, this work depicts the lives of young boys and girls struggling to survive. Hoping to deliver a never-before-seen experience to anime fans, the main staff has tackled this project with passion, challenging themselves with new expressions.

The appeal of this work lies in its background art. While background art should not overshadow the characters, we deliberately emphasized their presence this time. It was a difficult feat, but after numerous attempts, I believe we’ve created a screen where the art and characters complement each other. Production is currently in its climax, and the entire staff, including the cast, is breathing life into the work. I believe this will resonate with viewers and push Kyoto Animation to new heights. It will be available on Netflix this July. We hope that our passion will reach everyone from Kyoto. Please look forward to it.
Sparks Of Tomorrow was announced by Kyoto Animation on 2018, but it got delayed because of Kyoto Animation Arson Attack. More information will be revealed in the future. Bookmark Otaku Mantra for more updates!
Sparks Of Tomorrow
Sparks Of Tomorrow (Japanese Title: Nijusseiki Denki Mokuroku: Eureka Evrika, Synonyms: 20th Century Electricity Catalog) is a Japanese historical light novel series written by Yuki Hiro and illustrated by Ikeda Kazumi with art and backgrounds by Momoka Nagatani. This novel was published by Kyoto Animation in August 2018, under their KA Esuma Bunko imprint.
Netflix explains the plot for this anime:
“In an alternate version of the early 20th century where technological progress evolved along a different path shaped by steam power, Kyoto is blanketed in constant smoke.
A boy, hardened by the loss of his brother, grows distrustful after their shared dream of an “Age of Electricity” is cut short. A deeply devout girl hides her dreams and regrets for her deceased mother deep within her heart. When the two cross paths, they set about exploring the secrets of the 20th Century Electrical Catalog, a glimpse into the future they long for.
Together, they must confront their pasts and carve a path toward the future they once believed in.”
