After a week’s wait, Call of the Night Season 2 Episode 2 is here! It’s only been a week since the first episode aired, but the buzz is already noticeable on social platforms. The song “Mirage” by Creepy Nuts, the creators of epic anime tracks like “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” and “Otonoke”, is also receiving huge applause from fans. With all that in mind, we’re back with a new review. So let’s get into it.

The episode starts with some vague glimpses of a kid and a lady under an umbrella, creating a feeling of suspense and curiosity. The scene then shifts to a bar, where we see Kou’s school friend Mahiru being greeted by Hoshimi Kiku in a cute manner.

The aroma and environment give off a literal mystery vibe as Kiku inquires about Mahiru’s fight with Kou and consoles him. Mahiru feels down, regretting his past actions involving Kou. While consoling Mahiru, Kiku calmly suggests, “Then let’s go and apologise.” The vibe between them felt exactly like Makima and Denji from Chainsaw Man, if that reference clicks for you.

Next, we see Kou and Akira in a park, discussing their earlier fight. Akira also expresses concern about Kou becoming a vampire, which is quite considerate of her. After all, she witnessed what happened to that rumored teacher they encountered when sneaking into the school to investigate the seven mysteries in Season 1. Then she says, “You can suck my blood that time,” which doesn’t sound pleasant, but it can be taken as a sign of concern. She clearly doesn’t want him to end up like that teacher.

Following that, Mahiru shows up and apologises to Kou, creating a heartwarming moment. It’s also the first time we see Kiku meet Kou.

But just as Kou is about to grasp her hand, he gets a terrifying intuition from her and runs away in fear. The disturbing animation during this scene really ramps up the tension.

Later, we get a breathtaking exchange between Kiku and Kou. They have a bold conversation, and Kiku interrogates him about the vampire scent she’s picking up. Kou, in return, questions her intentions toward Mahiru.

He urges her to be honest with Mahiru about being a vampire. Kou’s concern for Mahiru is clear, but Kiku’s motives remain murky.

She’s got that Makima aura—creating a mysterious environment, manipulating situations…

Suddenly, she tells Mahiru about herself in a way that feels like she’s forcing the truth out, almost framing Kou in the process. Playing the victim card and setting Kou up, Kiku clearly isn’t just a regular character…

Mahiru had better be prepared for what’s ahead, I say.

Next, we see Akira and Mahiru at school, discussing Kou’s intentions of becoming a vampire. Akira discovers that Mahiru has similar thoughts but is more open to discussing them than Kou.

We then see Akira with a confident look as she says, “Kou is a stupid after all,” with a cool face, showing how much she trusts both of them. This moment really leaves an impression on the episode.

Then we’re treated to some cute romantic scenes between Mahiru and Kiku as he brings flowers to her shop. Honestly, sorry for repeating, but Kiku’s intentions still feel uncertain at this point. Let’s see what the future holds.

Later, Mahiru meets with Kou to discuss how to become a vampire. It’s clear Kou is uneasy about the whole thing—he suspects Kiku is doing this just to gain followers, not out of any deeper emotions. Not a bad assumption, honestly.

Also, the animation during Kou’s inner thoughts gives the scene a totally next-level vibe. Still confused, Kou calls Akkun and Hatsuke for advice, thinking a “men’s talk” might help him sort things out.

They all head to the bathhouse, as Hatsuke wanted, also getting some privacy. Kou then asks Hatsuke about Kiku, and we find out that Kiku is considered an S-class vampire, with around 50 followers.

That’s not normal. Most vampires don’t have that many followers.

Hatsuke also mentions that even other vampires are unsure about her desires and intentions. She always says things like:

I made a follower again, though I was not planning to do so.

This line raises an intriguing question: if she didn’t plan to, why did she? Is there meaning behind it? Mysteries are definitely building. But hey, the plot’s progressing—so that’s good news.

We’re also treated to some hilarious scenes between Akkun and Mahiru’s newfound “brotherhood,” which really lightens the mood. Their bonding moments are genuinely cute.

But then… Out of nowhere, the tension shifts—and it’s none other than our detective girl, Kyouko! What an unexpected, goosebump-inducing entrance. The smooth transition in background music makes it the peak of the episode.

We see Kyouko in her usual attire, with that same gloomy yet sneaky attitude—sitting in a chair, reading a book, throwing in snide comments, and giving Kou a death stare while calling him a “liar.”

And with that, the episode ends with a cliffhanger.
