ABC Animation, a subsidiary of Asahi Broadcasting Group Holdings, has established a new local company in Shanghai, China. The entity, officially named Aimanxi (Shanghai) Cultural Media Co., Ltd., was set up in January 2026 as part of the company’s push to strengthen its global anime strategy.
With this move, ABC Animation will directly manage events, merchandise, and licensing for its titles in China rather than relying entirely on third-party partners. It signals a more hands-on approach in one of the world’s most important anime consumer markets.

The first initiative under the new subsidiary will be a limited-time Violet Evergarden pop-up store, running from March 13 to March 29, 2026, at Jing’an Joy City (静安大悦城) in Shanghai. The mall, spanning around 160,000 square meters, is known for housing anime, manga, and game-related shops, including Japanese IP merchandise. The pop-up will feature plush toys, posters, acrylic stands, and other character goods.
Strengthening Global Anime Revenue
Asahi Broadcasting Group, one of Japan’s key commercial broadcasters based in Osaka, has been actively expanding its content business. Within the group, ABC Animation handles anime planning and production, while ABC Frontier oversees live-action projects. ABC Animation also owns animation studio SILVER LINK., giving it production control alongside IP management.
The group states that the Shanghai subsidiary is part of a broader effort to reinforce its global anime operations. Demand for Japanese anime, manga, and game-related merchandise remains strong in China, and ABC Animation aims to directly capture that revenue opportunity.
Beyond Violet Evergarden, several additional projects are reportedly already in motion. By deploying its IP directly on the ground in China, the company is positioning itself for stronger overseas monetization and long-term growth in the region.
