Twin Engine, an animation planning and production company, has acquired shares in Animation Studio NUT, the animation studio known for Saga of Tanya the Evil. NUT is now officially part of Twin Engine’s group of companies. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
Takuya Tsunoki, a co-founder and producer at Twin Engine, will take on the role of Representative Director at NUT. This marks another expansion in Twin Engine’s portfolio of animation studios, which already includes well-known names like Studio Colorido and Geno Studio.
Twin Engine’s Multi-Studio Strategy
Twin Engine operates more than 10 anime studios and brands, each functioning as an independent entity. The company’s approach is built around leveraging the unique strengths and creative identities of each studio rather than forcing them into a single unified brand.
NUT joins this group with the expectation that it will create synergistic effects across Twin Engine’s operations. By keeping studios independent while providing group-level support, Twin Engine aims to maintain creative freedom while benefiting from shared resources and collaboration.

About Twin Engine
Twin Engine was founded in 2014 by Koji Yamamoto, who currently serves as Representative Director. The company focuses on anime planning, production, and related businesses. What sets Twin Engine apart is its business model, which handles production, planning, and development entirely within the group rather than relying heavily on external partners.
Recently, Twin Engine has gained significant attention for Super Kaguya-hime!, a Netflix film that not only performed well on the streaming platform but also achieved major success in theatrical release. This cross-platform success highlights the company’s ability to create content that works across different distribution channels.
About NUT
NUT was established in 2017 and has built a strong reputation for its action direction. The studio is best known for producing Saga of Tanya the Evil (Yojo Senki), a military fantasy anime that became a hit with audiences. Other notable works from NUT include BLUE GIANT, a jazz-themed anime film, and original titles like Deca-Dence and Negaposi Angler.
In 2026, NUT is scheduled to release Saga of Tanya the Evil II, the sequel to its breakout series. With Twin Engine’s backing, the studio is now positioned to expand its production capabilities and take on new projects with greater resources and strategic support.
What This Acquisition Means
Acquisitions like this reflect a broader trend in the anime industry, where larger production companies are consolidating smaller studios to build more comprehensive production networks. Twin Engine’s strategy differs slightly from traditional consolidation, though. Instead of absorbing studios into a single brand, it maintains their independence while integrating them into a shared ecosystem.
This approach allows studios like NUT to retain their creative identity and specialized strengths, such as action direction, while gaining access to Twin Engine’s planning expertise, distribution connections, and financial stability.
For anime fans, this could mean more consistent output from NUT and potentially larger-scale projects in the future. With Twin Engine’s track record of producing content for both streaming platforms and theatrical releases, NUT’s upcoming works may reach wider audiences than ever before.
As Saga of Tanya the Evil II approaches its 2026 release, all eyes will be on how this new partnership shapes the studio’s future projects.
